i backed up everything on to my two-year-old external before reformatting my main, and not long after the device started failing. now it isn't being detected, and it makes knocking/clicking sounds which apparently means the heads are ruined

have you tried putting it in the freezer =D?
If you put your drive in a ziplock bag in the freezer overnight it lets the head contract, cos they expand from the constant heat, so it kinda settles the heads
google hard drive freezer trick or something
